U Street/African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo Station Community Rhythms, 1995
Alfred J. Smith
Painted mural
Community Rhythms, by Washington, D.C. artist Al Smith, is located at U Street/African-American War Memorial/Cardozo station on the Green Line in the District of Columbia. The mural, installed on facing walls along the station passageway, was commissioned by the National Museum of American Art in conjunction with the 1992 exhibit Memory and Metaphor: the Art of Romare Bearden, 1940-1987. The four-foot-high, one hundred-sixty-foot-long painted mural is a collage of Bearden-inspired painted images and photographs of jazz musicians, dancers and everyday people. The project was funded in part by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
