Benefits of the Metro College Intern Program

  • Paid internship
    Metro College Intern Program participants earn a competitive hourly wage starting at $21.00 per hour during their sophomore year, with pay increasing each year based on academic level. Participants in Graduate-Level Programs earn $25.00 per hour.
  • Progressive internship opportunities
    You can participate over multiple summers, gaining more experience and increasing levels of responsibility. Completing an internship does not guarantee employment with Metro, but by the time you have completed your final summer placement, you may be qualified to receive consideration for full-time employment, “bridging” directly into a job in the same department as your internship. 
  • Meaningful project work
    As a participant in the Metro College Intern Program, you’ll build your resume, form valuable connections, develop communication and teamwork skills, and gain exposure to a variety of career opportunities within Metro.
  • Commuter benefits
    Free travel on Metro Rail, Metro Bus, and Metro Access for the duration of your internship.
  • Site visits
    Site visits are a key component of the internship experience, providing interns with practical exposure to WMATA's core operations, including the Metro Integrated Command & Communications Center (MICC).
  • Leadership engagement opportunities
    Interns have opportunities to engage directly with WMATA leadership through special events organized by the Metro College Intern Program Team.
  • Academic credit
    If your College/University allows, eligible interns may have the opportunity to earn academic credit for their internship experience, subject to their institution's requirements.

Applying for the Metro College Intern Program

When internships are available, you can apply for opportunities through our jobs portal during the annual recruitment cycle, which typically runs from October through February.

Selected candidates may be invited to interview and must successfully complete a background check. Many interns return for additional internship terms throughout their academic careers, and upon graduation, may apply for full-time employment opportunities with WMATA. Academic-year and winter break opportunities may also be available based on organizational needs.

Referrals, relatives, and associates of Metro employees don’t receive special consideration. You won’t be permitted to work in the same Metro department as a close relative, and you need to disclose any Metro relationships when you apply.

Frequently asked questions

The Program runs approximately 12 weeks, typically between the summer months of June through August.

At minimum, a student must be a rising sophomore to be eligible for the program.

WMATA does not provide housing for those participating in the program.

Yes, you may apply to the internships that you feel matches your future career path.

Yes, although this is a paid internship you are eligible to receive college credit as well. Please provide the necessary documents to the program manager at the time of hire.
