As part of Metro's ongoing effort to make parking more convenient for riders, a trial of real-time sensing was implemented at the Fort Totten Metro Kiss and Ride Lot. This system uses sensors embedded in the pavement and in parking meters to let users know when spaces are available in the Kiss and Ride Lot. Eventually, we hope that similar sensors and monitoring technology will be available at all Metro metered parking spaces.
A graph showing daily parking trends at the meters assists users in predicting when they can expect spaces to be available at the lot. These same trends will be analyzed in the future by Metro staff and will help us determine how to better serve our customers.
Key to Availability
Colored circles on the Parking Status chart correspond to the likelihood of finding an available metered or ADA parking space within the lot. Green means odds are good, yellow means iffy and red means poor. "Available" and "In-Use" data show real-time occupancy numbers. The sum of "Available" and "In-use" is the total spaces monitored at Fort Totten: 32 metered spaces and 4 ADA spaces.
In the Typical Occupancy chart:
- the thin gray bars show real-time occupancy earlier today;
- the orange bar shows current occupancy;
- the blue line shows historical average occupancy; and
- the two wide dark gray bars show periods when parking is restricted to driver-attended waiting.
