Weekend service adjustments May 15-17 for rebuilding

Reconstruction of the Metrorail system will continue over the weekend of May 15-17 with service adjustments on all six rail lines.

This weekend, Orange, Silver and Blue line trains will operate every 18 minutes. Yellow and Green line trains will operate every 20 minutes with Yellow line trains operating between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Square only and Red Line trains will operate every 24 minutes with additional service between 9AM-9PM Saturday and Sunday.

Metro is investing $5.5 billion to install new rail, ties, platforms, escalators, signals, lighting, communication systems, and more. It represents the largest capital investment -- and work effort -- since the system's original construction in the early 1970s.


Red Line Red Line
Trains every 24 minutes

Red Line trains will operate as follows throughout the weekend:

  • Between Shady Grove & Glenmont: every 24 minutes
  • Between Grosvenor & Judiciary Square: every 12-14 minutes Saturday and Sunday from 9AM-9PM only

Work Performed: Ballast, track fastener and insulator renewal for a safer ride will cause Red Line trains to share one track between Twinbrook & Shady Grove and between Judiciary Square and Rhode Island Avenue.


Orange Line Orange Line
Trains every 18 minutes

Orange Line trains will operate every 18 minutes throughout the weekend.

Orange Line trains will share one track between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly to allow for platform rehabilitation, joint elimination, grout pad replacement, track fastener and insulator renewal for a safer ride.


Silver Line
Trains every 18 minutes

Silver Line trains will operate every 18 minutes throughout the weekend.

To coordinate with rebuilding work on the Orange Line, Silver Line trains will share one track between Stadium-Armory and Addison Road.

   Blue Line
Trains every 18 minutes

Blue Line trains will operate every 18 minutes throughout the weekend.

To coordinate with rebuilding work on the Orange Line, Blue Line trains will share one track between Stadium-Armory and Addison Road.

Yellow Line
Trains every 20 minutes

Yellow Line trains operate every 20 minutes between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Square only. Customers traveling to/from stations north of Mt. Vernon Sq should use a Green Line train to complete your trip.


Green Line
Trains every 20 minutes.

Green Line trains will operate every 20 minutes throughout the weekend.

Green Line trains will share one track between College Park & Greenbelt to allow for continued construction of our test track to accept Metro's new fleet of 7000-series railcars and between Naylor Road  & Branch Avenue to replace rail ties and insulators for a safer ride.

  • Metrobus service may provide an alternate travel option for some riders. To check, plan your trip using Trip Planner and select the "bus only" option.
  • Before traveling, consult the trip planner at wmata.com to check the special schedule and reduce your wait time. Trip Planner is updated to reflect weekend rebuilding schedules on Fridays; please check on Friday afternoon or later.
