The specific languages to be added will depend on availability from the vendor, cost and customer demand.)
How the translations are done
Pages on this site are being translated by software from SYSTRAN rather than by human translators. Metro is using this "machine translation" because it is the most affordable and practical way to offer translated pages in multiple languages of all the site's approximately 1,500 html pages. (The only PDF file available in multiple languages is the Metro pocket guide.) Machine translation also eliminates delays in having text manually translated. With machine translation, new or revised text is translated immediately on request. This instant translation is critical for communicating service disruptions, detours, severe weather advisories and other fast-changing information.
Machine translation does have limitations. The software does sometimes produce awkward translations. However, our surveys have determined that the translation quality is sufficient for customers to get the gist of the content.
