MEDIA ADVISORY: Metro and local officials to host press conference to mark end of SafeTrack and preparations for Surge #16

Metro will host a news conference with local officials from around the region June 15 at 11 a.m. to mark the end of the year-long SafeTrack maintenance program following Surge #16, a line segment shutdown between Shady Grove and Twinbrook that starts Saturday.

SafeTrack, an unprecedented track work program, significantly expanded maintenance time on weekends, weeknights and midday hours, including 16 safety surges with long duration outages to allow around-the-clock track work.  

Metro, with the support of state and local officials in Maryland, the District and Virginia, completed three years' of track work during the past 12 months and replaced more than 50,000 wooden crossties resulting in improved safety and reliability.

SafeTrack will conclude with Surge #16 starting Saturday, June 17 through Sunday, June 25. During the nine-day surge, buses will replace trains between Shady Grove and Twinbrook. The Shady Grove and Rockville stations will be closed. Work crews will focus on crosstie replacement, rail renewal and welding.
