This weekend: Track work to close three Red Line stations, single tracking on Green Line

During the weekend of Feb. 24-25, Metro is reminding customers that a section of the Red Line between Van Ness and Medical Center will be closed for maintenance and repairs. The Tenleytown, Friendship Heights, and Bethesda stations will be closed with shuttle buses replacing trains between all affected stations.

Additionally, trains will single track on the Green Line between Mt Vernon Sq and U Street, with trains operating every 12 minutes instead of every 8 minutes. During single tracking, trains take turns using the same track and must be clear of the single-track zone before a train can go through in the opposite direction.

Information on the construction was first posted on Metro's Planned Track Work page (wmata.com/trackwork) one month in advance, as well as in the Weekend Service advisory (wmata.com/weekend) at the start of the week and sent to MetroAlerts subscribers.

On the Red Line, crews will be working to replace the switch machines in the interlocking where trains are able to cross between separate tracks. Crews will also perform additional track work, install radio and fiber-optic cables, and other maintenance needs.

On the Green Line, workers will be replacing platform edge lighting. Crews must be able to access the tracks to get to the lighting assemblies from beneath the platform, which cannot be done while trains are running. The station configuration, with a shared platform separating the two tracks, allows trains to continue operating on one track while work is being performed on the other.
