What Is BrowseAloud?

BrowseAloud is free software that reads Web pages out loud. It can help anyone who has difficulty reading online, including people with mild visual impairments, low literacy, English as a second language or learning disabilities such as dyslexia.

Once you have the BrowseAloud toolbar on your computer, all you need to do is click on a selection of text. BrowseAloud will highlight the words and read them out loud.

How do I get BrowseAloud Plus?

When you're using a tablet or desktop computer, go to the top right corner of this website and click on the BrowseAloud icon Browse Aloud speaker icon. This will launch the BrowseAloud Plus toolbar. Then simply click any text to hear it read aloud.

The Browse Aloud features and options are accessed from an easy to use, floating toolbar that looks like this:

The buttons offer different help, depending on what you need:

  1. Hover to Speak
    Hover to Speak
    Hover to Speak starts reading the page out loud - this feature is on by default
  2. Play
    Play Button
    Play starts reading selected text or reads from the top of the page
  3. Translate Page
    Translate Page Button
    Translate Page provides written and spoken translations in multiple languages
  4. Generate MP3
    Generate MPE Button
    Generate MP3 converts selected text into an MP3
  5. Screenmask
    Screenmask Button
    Screenmask blocks distractions on screen with a tinted mask
  6. Text Magnifier
    Text Magnifier Button
    Text Magnifier enlarges text and reads it out loud
  7. Web Page Simplifier
    Web Page Simplifier Button
    Web Page Simplifier removes clutter from the screen, displaying only the main text
  8. Settings
    Settings Button
    Settings customize options to suit inliidual needs or preferences
  9. Help
    Help Button
    Help shows a simple help page that explains what the browsealoud toolbar does
