How to buy a pass
- Online:
- On our Smart Trip account portal — add a pass directly to your existing Smart Trip card (expect up to one hour for delivery)
- In person:
- At any Fare Vending Machine — located in all Metro Rail stations by the faregates — add to an existing Smart Trip card or buy a new card (+$2 new card fee)
- At select retail locations
Purchase passes 50% off
Seniors and riders with disabilities who are enrolled in a Metro "Reduced Fare Program" are eligible to receive 50% off Metro passes.

7-Day Unlimited Metro Bus + Regional Partners Pass

- Activates on first use, not the date of purchase.
- Valid for 7 consecutive days of unlimited Metro Bus, ART, and Fairfax Connector rides (up to $2.25 per ride)
- Covers the first $2.25 of fare on Metro Bus Express Routes (F19, F28, F81, and F83) — the difference is deducted from Stored Value funds or Smart Benefits on your Smart Trip card
- Stored Value is cash you have loaded to your Smart Trip card that can be applied to rides or parking at Metro facilities
- Eligible for payment with Smart Benefits Transit Pass Benefits

1-, 3-, and 7-Day Unlimited Metro Rail and Metro Bus Pass
- Activates on first use, not the date of purchase.
- Valid for unlimited Metro Rail and Metro Bus travel according to the pass purchased
- Expires at the end of the last consecutive operating day
- Covers the first $2.25 of fare on Metro Bus Express Routes (F19, F28, F81, F83)
Monthly Unlimited Metro Rail and Metro Bus Pass
- Available for a number of fare levels; use our Trip Planner to find your right fare level
- Valid for one calendar month based on date of purchase:
- Before the 15th day of the month, a pass starts when the Smart Trip card is tapped at a rail station or on a bus and is valid for the remainder of the current month.
- After the 15th day of the month, a pass is valid for the following month, starting on the first day of the month.
- Covers the first $2.25 of fare on Metro Bus Express Routes (F19, F28, F81, F83)
7-Day Short Trip Pass
- Activates on first use, not the date of purchase.
- Expires at the end of the seventh consecutive operating day
- Covers unlimited trips on Metro Rail but only up to a fare of $4.50 — the difference is deducted from Stored Value funds or Smart Benefits on your Smart Trip card
- Note: Stored Value is cash you have loaded to your Smart Trip card that can be applied to rides or parking at Metro facilities.
- Covers the first $2.25 of fare on Metro Bus Express Routes (F19, F28, F81, F83)
Other ways to ride and pay
Transit Link Cards
- Works like a monthly pass on MARC, VRE, or MTA Commuter Buses
- Allows unlimited Metro Rail rides from the first day to the last day of the month
- Allows unlimited regular Metro Bus rides for a full month — additional charge applied for Express Routes
- Purchase cards at Commuter Direct; the commuter stores at Ballston, Rosslyn, Crystal City, and Takoma Langley Crossroads Transit Center; and the MARC Odenton train station. Transit Link cards cannot be purchased at the Metro Sales Office
Smart Benefits Transit Pass Benefits
