Approaching the finish line

Work continues at the four Green/Yellow Line stations closed since May for Metro’s Platform Improvement Project, part of Metro’s Capital Improvement Program which invests in system safety, reliability and the region’s economy. These stations are set to reopen in a month, and the newly constructed platforms and many other customer experience improvements are in their final stages of work at the Greenbelt, College Park-U of Md, Prince George’s Plaza and West Hyattsville stations. Detailed in the updates below, crews have been working around the clock to improve and modernize the stations for our customers.
This summer’s work also includes constructing an important safety feature at all four stations: the “area of safe dispersal,” or ASD. In the past few weeks, the project team has been constructing new concrete areas at the end of each platform that will provide room for customers who cannot quickly exit the station in an emergency. Greenbelt
Crews are laying new slip-resistant tile on the platform and continue glazing the canopy skylights. Expansion joints are now being installed in the pedestrian tunnel. Plumbing and restroom fixtures have been installed in mezzanine bathrooms to enhance our employee and customer experience at the station.
Platform edge lights have also been installed, accompanied by conduit and wiring that enables the edge lights to blink, signaling to passengers that a train is approaching, a critical safety feature at the station. A new metal pan ceiling was installed in the pedestrian tunnel, and station improvements like CCTV fixtures and speakers have been added. New LED handrail lighting on the stairs leading to the platform are being prepared.

College Park-U of Md
Almost all of the architectural and structural work, as well as mechanical, plumbing, communications and electrical work at College Park is nearly finished. Platform tile installation is 95% complete and the canopy skylight glazing is over 80% complete. Installation of the track edge lights at this station is more than halfway done, and new Public Announcement (PA) speakers have been installed. Stainless-steel shelters, station pylons and new PIDS are also nearly finished.

Prince George's Plaza
Slip-resistant tiles have been installed on both sides of the platform at Prince George’s Plaza. Other work completed includes elevator doors and bathroom ceiling framing installation, and kiosks are now being painted. Pylon speakers and recessed light fixtures have been added, and globe lighting is up next. Additionally, brand new faregates have been installed as part of Metro’s faregate modernization project, and concrete work continues on ASD areas.

West Hyattsville
Metro’s college interns recently toured the West Hyattsville Station as part of the College Intern Program. They got a first-hand view of the recent construction efforts at West Hyattsville, including the new slip-resistant tiles on the platform, which will soon be added to the mezzanine area. In addition to the platform work, final alterations are being made to fixtures in the customer restrooms. Mezzanine granite was also installed near the station entrance, and concrete was poured in preparation for new stairs leading to an ASD entrance.
