Northern Bus Garage Replacement
The Northern Bus Garage Replacement Project will completely reconstruct the current building into a modern bus facility while preserving the historic 14th Street façade. Built in 1906 as a streetcar storage facility, the garage is now out of service due to its deteriorating condition. Located on 14th Street NW, between Decatur and Buchanan Streets, the newly built garage will house 150 buses and include infrastructure needed to support an electric bus fleet in the future, as envisioned under Metro’s zero-emission bus plan.
In addition to building an environmentally friendly facility, the reconstruction plan includes retail space, streetscape improvements and a community room for local meetings. Metro is actively working with retail strategists and community members to identify neighborhood-serving retailers for the new retail space along the side of the building facing 14th Street, NW.
Community Engagement Meetings
Metro recently hosted a series of virtual community engagement meetings to discuss recent project updates and provide input on the latest draft designs. In response to earlier public feedback and the May concept review hearing before DC's Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB), Metro has undertaken a significant project redesign, responding to concerns around safety, environmental impacts and aesthetics. The meeting presentations, video recordings and other documents are available below:
