Metro launches Silver Line Extension with opening ceremony; welcomes customers to #RideSilver to six new stations

New rail connections to Dulles International Airport, Reston, Herndon, and Eastern Loudoun County

Today Metro celebrated the opening of the Silver Line Extension, connecting customers to six new stations, adding 11.4 miles of track to the Metrorail system, and beginning operations at a modern rail maintenance facility. The Silver Line Extension provides customers with a new connection to Washington Dulles International Airport, as well as new service between Reston, Va. and eastern Loudoun County. Today's grand opening also marks the completion of the Silver Line project, a generational infrastructure investment in Northern Virginia.

Metro customers invited to ride the first passenger train to six new Silver Line stations

Your chance to ride the first train on the Silver Line Extension is here. Service begins November 15 at approximately 2 p.m. when the first train departs the Ashburn Station headed for Downtown Largo. Customers in Loudoun County will now have convenient access to Metrorail and Washington Dulles International Airport will be an easy train ride away for people across the region.

Get ready to ride the Silver Line, six new stations opening November 15

Opening day is set for the Silver Line Extension - Tuesday, November 15 – connecting Metrorail customers to Washington Dulles International Airport and Loudoun County for the first time. The announcement came from Metro Board Members and employees in a video touting “We’re Ready,” marking the opening for customers and culmination of the largest expansion of Metrorail since the system’s inception.

Silver Line Extension Travel Times and Destinations

Metro is the region’s opportunity connector, and the Silver Line Extension will provide plenty of opportunities to access jobs, shopping, sports venues, and countless other destinations around the region.

Once an opening date is set for the Silver Line Extension, Metro’s Trip Planner will be updated with travel times to and from the six new stations. For now, we’ve prepared a few example trips below and compiled an extensive list of 24 destinations that you can view on the Silver Line Extension website.

You'll start to see new maps rolling out in stations, trains and transit centers, featuring Reston Town Center, Herndon, Innovation Center, Washington Dulles International Airport, Loudoun Gateway and Ashburn. Emergency Preparedness Training Exercise at Ashburn Station

Emergency Preparedness Training Exercise at Ashburn StationOn August 17, more than 100 fire and emergency personnel converged on the new Ashburn Station to carry out one of three full-scale emergency drills planned for the Silver Line Extension. Metro conducted the exercise in coordination with Fairfax County, Loudoun County, and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) as part of preparations for the opening. Silver Line Extension transferred to Metro's control

Metro took control of the Silver Line Extension today at 6:00 a.m. This milestone, known as the "Operational Readiness Date" (ORD), marks the point where provisional care and control of the Extension – including six new Silver Line stations, 11.4 miles of new track, and a new rail yard – is formally transferred from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) to Metro.
