Changes coming to summer shutdown area

Published: Friday, June 26, 2020

This week Metro announced upcoming service changes that will affect the Orange and Silver line stations in the summer shutdown area. Free shuttles will now serve three stations that were previously closed, and the Silver Line will resume service in mid-August.

Shuttle Service Expanding to Previously Closed Stations

Starting Sunday, June 28, free shuttles will serve all Orange and Silver Line stations west of Ballston-MU. As Metro reopens stations across the system that were closed at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic response, shuttle service will be added to Greensboro, McLean and East Falls Church stations.

Changes to the Orange and Silver Line shuttle service include the following:

  • The Silver Line Local shuttle will stop at all stations between Wiehle-Reston East and McLean, then continue to Ballston-MU.
  • A new shuttle, the East Falls Church–Ballston-MU Express, will be added to connect East Falls Church and Ballston-MU stations.

You can find more information about shuttle service on our Communication Toolkit page.

Silver Line Service to Resume and West Falls Church to Open in August

Silver Line service will resume on August 16, weeks earlier than originally planned, and West Falls Church station will reopen to customers for rail service.

This new date reflects the progress made to date on two fronts:

  • Crews working to rebuild deteriorating station platforms are making excellent progress, allowing for trains to pass through East Falls Church station without stopping by mid-August; and,
  • Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority (MWAA) contractors will have completed work that necessitated the temporary suspension of rail service to allow for the “phase II” extension to be connected to the existing Metrorail system.

Assuming the platform reconstruction work continues at its current pace, the remaining three closed Orange Line stations – Vienna, Dunn Loring and East Falls Church – are scheduled to reopen around Labor Day.
