Platform Improvement Project construction underway at Orange Line stations

Published: Thursday, April 30, 2020

With just a few weeks until the summer shutdown on the Orange and Silver lines, Platform Improvement Project construction is underway at Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church and East Falls Church stations. To get a head start before the stations close, crews have removed tile and ceiling panels from the station mezzanines and pedestrian bridges, installed supportive shoring under platform edges and started filling cracks in the concrete throughout the stations.

Most of the work has taken place after the stations are closed for the day, so the impact to customers has been minimal. Some of the more invasive work, like installing shoring under platform edges, requires night work, weekend single tracking or station closures.

A single tracking event this coming weekend, May 2-3, between Vienna and East Falls Church will advance the work further.

Here’s a look at some of the work that’s already taking place at the stations:

  • At Vienna, crews have removed all the tiles and concrete topping slab from the pedestrian bridge and mezzanine areas. Installation of new fire alarm conduit is underway, and crews have started mending ceiling cracks.
  • At Dunn Loring, crews have removed most of the ceiling panels and have started repairing cracks at the station. Tile and topping slabs have been removed on the pedestrian bridge and mezzanine levels. Crews have started running conduit for electricity and fire safety systems.

  • At West Falls Church, crews have been able to work on the platform edges along one of the station’s three tracks, without impacting train service. Shoring under the platform edges is installed and platform edge demolition is underway. Tile and topping slabs have been removed on the pedestrian bridge and mezzanine levels, and most of the ceiling panels have been removed.

  • At East Falls Church, all mezzanine tile and ceiling panels have been removed, and concrete cleaning is underway. Crews have started removing platform lights and have added temporary lighting throughout the station and safety railings in preparation for upcoming roof repair work.  Demolition of the platform tile and topping slab has begun, and crews are getting ready for skylight demolition in preparation for new skylights that will be installed at the station.
