As we continue our series looking back at the construction and historic photos of the six Blue and Yellow line stations under reconstruction, this week we’re featuring Van Dorn St Station. When Van Dorn St opened on June 15, 1991, it became Metro’s 67th station and the first Blue Line only station south of Reagan National Airport. The addition of the station marked Metro’s largest single-station track extension project, adding an additional 3.9 miles and bringing the total length of the Metrorail system to 79 miles. The station features a gull roof style, with an overhanging arch meant to emulate curved walls of Metro’s underground stations. The featured photos here showcase construction and site visits to the station in July 1987.
