Arlington Cemetery Canopy Installation

Advisory Effective: 6/1/23 - 10/31/24

On June 5, 2023, Metro will begin a major capital project to install two canopies above the station escalators at Arlington Cemetery. One canopy will be installed at the station’s north entrance on the north side of Memorial Drive, and one canopy will be installed at the station’s south entrance on the south side of Memorial Drive.

Metro is installing canopies as part of an ongoing project to replace or install nine canopies across the Metrorail system by 2026. Canopies shield customers and escalators from weather conditions, helping to protect the life, longevity, and reliability of our escalators.

How will this work affect my trip?
The north entrance, on the north side of Memorial Drive, will be closed for approximately three months from June 2023 through September 2023. While the north entrance is closed, the south entrance on the south side of Memorial Drive will remain open and is accessible from a crosswalk directly across from the north entrance.

When the north entrance reopens, work on both the north and south canopies will continue during non-revenue hours.

Throughout construction, the two elevators on the north side of Memorial Drive that service both sides of the platform will remain open.

How long will the project take?
The north entrance closure is anticipated to take approximately three months. Following the entrance closure, construction on both canopies will continue until completion in late fall 2024.

How can I stay informed about the project?
