Farragut North Escalator Replacement

Advisory Effective: 1/9/23 - 11/16/24

En Español

On January 9, 2023, Metro will begin a major capital project replacing six entrance escalators at Farragut North at the L Street and K Street entrances. The project will replace one escalator at a time with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable.

Metro’s contractor KONE will install the escalators as part of an ongoing project to replace 130 escalators across the Metrorail system by 2028, helping to ensure the regional infrastructure remains in a state of good repair.

How will this work affect my trip?

The escalators will be replaced one at a time starting with the east entrance at the NE corner of Connecticut Avenue & L Street, NW. While one escalator is being replaced the remaining two escalators will be operational with one escalator going up and one going down. Following construction at the east entrance, escalator replacement will continue at the south entrance at the NE corner of Connecticut Avenue & K Street, NW. The elevator located at K Street will remain open throughout construction.

How long will the project take?

Each escalator replacement is expected to take approximately four months for site preparation, demolition, construction, installation, and testing. The replacement of all six escalators is expected to be completed by mid-November 2024.

How can I stay informed about the project?

This advisory will be updated throughout construction.
