Grosvenor-Strathmore Escalator Replacement

Advisory Effective: 5/15/23 - 2/29/24

On May 15, 2023, Metro will begin a major capital project replacing two entrance escalators, at the west station entrance on the west side of Rockville Pike near Tuckerman Lane, and two platform escalators at Grosvenor-Strathmore. The four escalators will be replaced with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. The escalators are being installed as part of an ongoing project to replace 130 escalators across the Metrorail system by 2028.

How will this work affect my trip?

One entrance escalator and one platform escalator at Grosvenor-Strathmore Station will be replaced simultaneously. During construction, the adjacent escalator not being replaced will be available as a two-way staircase. Access to the mezzanine from the west entrance will only be available using one escalator as a two-way staircase.

The elevator and both station entrances will remain open throughout construction.

How long will the project take?

The replacement of all four escalators is expected to take approximately 8 months for site preparation, demolition, construction, installation, and testing.

How can I stay informed about the project?
