Metro Transition Bus Shelter Installation Program

Advisory Effective: 1/12/23 - 1/12/24

En Español

As you may have noticed, many Metrorail Station bus shelters have begun showing their age which is almost 50 years old! Between the shelters’ decades of wear-and-tear, unavailable replacement parts, and instances of vandalism, the bus shelters are no longer considered repairable. Metro’s Better Bus program has been developing a new design shelter that will replace the existing shelters. However, due to materials and supply chain delays those shelters will not be ready until 2024.

To ensure our customers have a safe, comfortable area to wait until the new design shelters are ready for installation in 2024, Metro will begin to replace existing bus shelters with transition bus shelters beginning in February 2023. The transition shelters will remain in place until the new design shelters are ready in 2024.

How will this project affect my trip?
Over the next few months the following bus shelters will be replaced at the following Metrorail Stations.

  • Fort Totten
    • C, D, F, G and H
  • Brookland/CUA
    • A, B, D, D, E, F, G, and J
  • Takoma
    • A, B and E
  • New Carrollton
    • H
  • Capitol Heights
    • A and B
  • Addison Road
    • A, B and C
  • Shady Grove
    • A

It is anticipated that during removal and installation of the shelters there will be minimal to no impact to customers. Work is scheduled to occur on select weekdays from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM which may require an early closure of some shelter(s). Customers will be notified in advance and signs will be posted at the shelter(s). Should any other disruptions occur due to unforeseen circumstances, customers will be notified of any changes.

Will there be noticeable changes?
The transition shelters will provide customers a comfortable waiting area that offers protection from inclement weather. All existing amenities such as seating, lighting and passenger information will remain. Artwork unique to each station area will enhance the appearance of the shelter.

How do I stay informed?
