On September 12, 2022, Metro will begin a major capital project replacing the two entrance escalators at the Massachusetts Ave., NE entrance to Union Station. Both escalators will be replaced with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. The escalators are being installed as part of an ongoing project to replace 130 escalators across the Metrorail system by 2028. Twenty-seven escalators have been replaced since the project began.
How will this work affect my trip?
The Massachusetts Ave., NE entrance will remain open and the escalators will be replaced one at a time. One escalator will be available as a two-way staircase during construction.
How long will the project take?
The replacement of both escalators is expected to take approximately 8 months for site preparation, demolition, construction, installation, and testing.
