En Español

On February 13, 2023, Metro will begin a major capital project replacing the three entrance escalators and two platform escalators at Benning Road. The five escalators will be replaced with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. The escalators are being installed as part of an ongoing project to replace 130 escalators across the Metrorail system by 2028. Forty-three escalators have been replaced since the project began.

How will this work affect my trip?

Escalators at Benning Road Station will be replaced one at a time. During construction for the entrance escalators, the two adjacent escalators not being replaced at a given time will be operational with one going up and one going down. During construction for the platform escalators, the adjacent escalator not being replaced will be available as a two-way staircase.

The entrance and elevator will remain open throughout construction.

How long will the project take?

The replacement of all five escalators is expected to take approximately 1.5 years for site preparation, demolition, construction, installation, and testing.

How can I stay informed about the project?
