Capitol South Escalator Replacement

Advisory Effective: 3/21/22 - 11/8/22

*Updated to reflect station closing all day Aug 13-14

On March 21, 2022, Metro began a major capital project replacing the three entrance escalators at Capitol South. The project will replace the current escalators with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. Metro’s contractor KONE will install the escalators as part of an ongoing project to replace 130 escalators across the Metrorail system by 2028, helping to ensure the regional infrastructure remains in a state of good repair.

How will this work affect my trip?
The entrance will remain open during construction. Once the first escalator has been replaced and returned to service, the remaining two escalators will be replaced simultaneously. Throughout construction at least one escalator going up, as well as the elevator and stairway, will be available.

Some weekend closures are necessary to remove the old escalators and install the new ones. The station will be closed from opening until 7:00 pm on:
• Saturday, August 6, 2022 – Sunday, August 7, 2022
UPDATE (8/12): To accommodate additional station work, Capitol South will be closed all day and will not reopen at 7 p.m. as originally scheduled on:
• Saturday, August 13, 2022 – Sunday, August 14, 2022

How long will the project take?
The replacement of all three escalators is expected to take approximately 8 months for site preparation, demolition, construction, installation and testing.
