Improved frequency and changes to Metrobus service begin Sunday, Sept. 5, 2021

Beginning Sunday, September 5, Metro will adjust service on many bus routes across the National Capital Region. New high-frequency service where buses will be scheduled to arrive every 12 minutes will be added to 20 lines, with increased 20-minute frequency on 16 lines throughout the region – an improvement for 60 percent of Metrobus customers. Another 69 bus routes will improve or restore service. In addition to the high-frequency and other improvements, Metro will continue to operate existing late-night service until 2 a.m. to meet the needs of customers and businesses in the region. 

Other adjustments include:

  • In Virginia, service will be changed on several routes in response to Alexandria Transit Vision Plan implementation
  • In Maryland, normal service will resume at Prince George’s Plaza Station following completion of the Platform Improvement Project
  • In the District of Columbia, service to the Kennedy Center will be restructured

NEW Frequent Service 

Frequency will increase and consistent all-day service will be implemented on 36 lines to encourage ridership, improve convenience, and support economic recovery across the region.  Buses will operate every 12 minutes or better, or every 20 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily on the following routes:

District of Columbia 

30N, 30S Friendship Heights-Southeast 

  • Trips will be added on routes 31, 32, 33, and 36 to replace routes 30N and 30S. The added 31, 32, 33, and 36 service will maintain frequency and capacity. Routes 30N and 30S will no longer operate. 


31, 33 Wisconsin Avenue 

  • Service will operate every 12 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily between Friendship Heights and Washington Circle. 

32, 36 Pennsylvania Avenue 

  • Service will operate every 12 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily between Foggy Bottom and Minnesota & Pennsylvania avenues SE. 

42, 43 Mount Pleasant   

  • Service will be extended to Potomac Park and the Kennedy Center. Between Farragut Square and the Kennedy Center, buses will operate along 18th Street, 19th Street, and Virginia Avenue NW. Service will no longer operate between Farragut Square and Gallery Place. 
  • Additional weekday rush hour trips are added to the schedule. 


52, 54 14th Street 

  • Service will operate every 12 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily between 14th Street & Colorado Avenue NW and 14th Street & New York Avenue NW. 

62, 63 Takoma-Petworth   

  • Route 63 will operate along New Hampshire Avenue, 11th Street, Florida Avenue, and Vermont Avenue NW between Georgia Avenue-Petworth Station and Federal Triangle. Service will no longer operate along portions of Sherman Avenue and 13th, H, and I (Eye) streets NW. 
  • Along 11th Street NW, trips will alternate with Route 64 to provide improved combined frequency for customers who can use either route. 
  • Additional weekday trips will be added to the schedule and Route 63 will be restored during rush hours. 


64 Fort Totten- Federal Triangle 

  • Additional trips will be added to the schedule. 
  • Along 11th Street NW, trips will alternate with Route 63 to provide improved combined frequency for customers who can use either route. 

79 Georgia Avenue Limited 

  • Service will operate every 12 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. 
  • Hours of service will extend to 9 p.m. daily 

80 North Capitol Street   

  • Service will operate every 12 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. 
  • Service will only operate between Fort Totten and McPherson Square. Service will no longer operate between McPherson Square and the Kennedy Center.  Service between Farragut Square and the Kennedy Center will be available on routes 42 and 43. 
  • Travel times will be adjusted to improve on-time performance. 


90, 92 U Street-Garfield 

  • Service will operate every 12 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily between Martin Luther King, Jr Avenue & Good Hope Road SE and 13th & U streets NW. 

A2 Anacostia-Washington Highlands

  • Near Franklin Square, the temporary detour and terminal at 13th & K streets NW will become permanent. 
  • Service will no longer operate between Dupont Circle and Franklin Square.

D6 Sibley Hospital-Stadium Armory 

  • Additional trips will be added to the schedule and travel times will be adjusted to improve on-time performance. 

D8 Hospital Center

  • Service will operate every 12 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily between University Avenue & Riggs Road and Wheaton Station. 
  • Scheduled weekday and Sunday travel times will be adjusted to improve service. 
  • Route C4 service will return to normal at Prince George’s Plaza Station following completion of the Platform Improvement Project. 

C8 College Park-White Flint 

  • Additional trips will be added to the weekday and Saturday schedule. 

C12, C14 Hillcrest Heights 

  • Additional trips will be added to the weekday schedule. 

D12 Southern Avenue-Suitland 

  • Service will operate every 20 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. 

D13, D14 Oxon Hill-Suitland 

  • All Route D13 service will be converted to Route D14. 
  • In Glassmanor, Route D14 will no longer operate along Livingston Road, Livingston Terrace, Marcy Avenue, Deal Drive, Kennebec Street, Glassmanor Drive, Irvington Street, and Audrey Lane due to increased service on routes D12 and P12. D14 buses will remain on Indian Head Highway. 
  • Between Wilson Bridge Drive and the intersection of Indian Head Highway & Oxon Hill Road, service will operate along Kirby Hill Road and Oxon Hill Road, adding service at Oxon Hill Park & Ride. Service will continue to Wilson Bridge Drive. 


F4 New Carrollton-Silver Spring 

  • Service will operate every 12 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. 
  • In Riverdale Park, service will operate along Queensbury Road between Baltimore Avenue and 49th Avenue instead of along East-West Highway, adding service at the Riverdale Park Town Center MARC station. 
  • Service will return to normal at Prince George’s Plaza Station following completion of the Platform Improvement Project. 

F6 New Carrollton-Fort Totten 

  • Additional trips will be added to the schedule.

  • Route Z8 service will be extended to Greencastle Park & Ride during weekday rush hours. 
  • The Route Z8 stop at Verizon-Chesapeake Complex will no longer be served (customers should board buses along Old Columbia Pike). 
  • Service will be combined into one line, the new Z6, Z8 Silver Spring-Fairland Line, to better inform customers who can use either route of frequent service. 
  • Scheduled travel times will be adjusted to improve on-time performance. 

Z7 Laurel-Burtonsville 

  • Travel times will be adjusted to improve on-time performance.

1A, 1B Wilson Boulevard-Vienna 

  • Route 1A service will operate every 20 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. 
  • Route 1B will be restored, providing service between Dunn Loring Station, Fairview Park, and Ballston. 

1C Fair Oaks-Fairfax Boulevard  

  • Hours of service and frequency will be restored to pre-pandemic levels. 
  • Service will operate between Dunn Loring Station and Fair Oaks Mall. Service will no longer operate between Fair Oaks Mall and West Ox Road & Alliance Drive. 

2B Fair Oaks-Jermantown Road  

  • Hours of service and frequency will be restored to pre-pandemic levels. 
  • Service will operate between Dunn Loring Station and Fair Oaks Mall. Service will no longer operate between Fair Oaks Mall and West Ox Road & Alliance Drive. 

3Y Lee Highway-Farragut Square  

  • Service will be restored between Farragut Square and Lee Highway & North George Mason Drive, with a new terminal established near Virginia Hospital Center. Service will no longer operate between East Falls Church Metrorail Station and Lee Highway & North George Mason Drive. 
  • Afternoon rush hour trips will begin on northbound 13th & H streets NW and operate along I (Eye) Street NW. Service will no longer operate along 15th & K streets NW. 

7A, 7F, 7Y Lincolnia-North Fairlington 
7W Lincolnia-Pentagon 

  • Service will operate every 20 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily between the Pentagon and Southern Towers. 
  • Service will change in response to Alexandria Transit Vision plan implementation.   

Route 7A: 

  • South of Southern Towers, service will operate to Van Dorn Street Station along Seminary Road, Kenmore Avenue, North Van Dorn Street, Holmes Run Parkway, North Ripley Street, Duke Street, South Reynolds Street, Edsall Road, South Pickett Street, South Van Dorn Street, Metro Road, and Eisenhower Avenue. Service will no longer operate between Southern Towers and Lincolnia. 
  • Every other trip will operate between the Pentagon and Southern Towers (short trips) or between the Pentagon and Van Dorn Street Station (long trips). 
  • Route 7A will continue to operate between the Pentagon, Pentagon City, Shirlington, and Southern Towers. New DASH Route 35 will provide service between the Pentagon, Southern Towers, Mark Center, and Lincolnia. 
  • The line name will change to Landmark-North Fairlington

 Routes 7F, 7Y: 

  • Service will no longer operate. 
  • Route 7A will continue to operate between the Pentagon, Pentagon City, Shirlington, and Southern Towers. New DASH Route 35 will provide service between the Pentagon, Southern Towers, Mark Center, and Lincolnia.  

Route 7W: 

  • Service will no longer operate. 
  • New DASH Route 35 will provide service between the Pentagon, Southern Towers, Mark Center, and Lincolnia.  

8W Foxchase-Seminary Valley 

  • Service will be restored. 

10A Alexandria-Pentagon 

  • Additional trips will be added to the weekday and Saturday schedule. 

11C Mount Vernon 

  • Additional trips will be added to the schedule. 

16A, 16C, 16E Columbia Pike 
16G, 16H Columbia Pike-Pentagon City 

  • Service will operate every 12 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily between Columbia Pike & South Joyce Street and Columbia Pike & South Dinwiddie Street at stops served by all routes. 

16Y Columbia Pike-Farragut Square  

  • Service will be restored with trips operating in both directions between Barcroft and downtown DC during weekday rush hours. 

17K Kings Park Express 

  • Additional trips will be added to the schedule. 

18G, 18H Orange Hunt  

  • Routes 18G and 18H will be combined into a new Route 18G. 
  • Service will operate between Huntsman Boulevard & Fairfax County Parkway and the Pentagon via Huntsman Boulevard, Old Keene Mill Road, Hillside Road, Forrester Boulevard, Carrleigh Parkway, Greeley Boulevard, Old Keene Mill Road, and the Pentagon. Service will no longer operate along Huntsman Boulevard between Cork County Court & Blarney Stone Drive, Blarney Stone Drive, Field Master Drive, Conservation Drive, Cottontail Court, Game Lord Drive, Reservation Drive, Rockefeller Lane, Arley Drive, Sydenstricker Road, Rolling Road, and Greeley Boulevard between Rolling and Old Keene Mill roads. 

21C Landmark-Holmes Run Parkway 

  • Additional trips will be added to the schedule. 

22F Barcroft-South Fairlington 

  • Additional trips will be added to the schedule. 

23B, 23T McLean-Crystal City  

  • Service will operate every 20 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily between Ballston and Shirlington. 

25B Landmark-Ballston  

  • Service will change in response to Alexandria Transit Vision plan implementation. 
  • Service will operate between Ballston, Southern Towers, and Mark Center (Mondays-Saturdays) or between Ballston and Southern Towers (Sundays). Service will no longer operate between Southern Towers and Van Dorn Street Station. 
  • Service between Southern Towers, Landmark, and Van Dorn Street Station will be available on Route 7A. Weekday rush hour service on Taney Avenue will be available on Route 8W. Service between Southern Towers, Inova Alexandria Hospital, and Foxchase will be available on Route 28A. 
  • The line name will change to Carlin Springs Road


28A Leesburg Pike  

  • Service will operate every 12 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. 
  • Service will change in response to Alexandria Transit Vision plan implementation and to improve connectivity in Falls Church. 
  • A new Metrorail connection will be available at East Falls Church Station. Metrorail connections will continue at King Street-Old Town, West Falls Church, and Tysons Corner stations. 

     In Alexandria: 

  • Service will operate along Duke Street (limited-stops served at Alexandria Commons, Early Street, and North Jordan Street), North Jordan Street, North Howard Street, and Seminary Road (all stops served along North Jordan Street, North Howard Street, and Seminary Road), and continue the existing route to Seven Corners. 
  • Service along will no longer operate along King Street, West Braddock Road, and North Howard Street between West Braddock and Seminary roads.  Service along King Street will be available on new DASH Route 31.  Service along West Braddock Road and North Howard Street will be available on new DASH Route 36. 

In Falls Church: 

  • Service will operate between Broad & Washington streets and Seven Corners along North Washington Street, Washington Boulevard, to East Falls Church Station, Sycamore Street, Roosevelt Street, and Wilson Boulevard. Service will no longer operate along East Broad Street between North Washington Street and Seven Corners. 

28F Skyline City 

  • Additional trips will be added to the schedule. 

29K, 29N Alexandria-Fairfax 

  • Service will operate every 20 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily between King Street-Old Town Station and Little River Turnpike & Pickett Road. 
  • Service will operate every 40 minutes or better from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily between George Mason University and Little River Turnpike & Pickett Road (Route 29K) and between Vienna Station and Little River Turnpike & Pickett Road (Route 29N). 

Metroway-Potomac Yard 

  • Service will operate every 12 minutes on weekdays and every 20 minutes on Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. 

NH2 National Harbor-Alexandria  

  • At King Street-Old Town Station buses will serve Bay J instead of Bay E. 

REX Richmond Highway Express
