New College Park Station Entrance Stairs

Advisory Effective: 7/5/22 - 6/30/24

Beginning July 2022, Metro will replace the existing street level escalator at College Park’s River Road & Campus Drive entrance with a new, wider staircase.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) code 17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators requires the installation of canopies over exposed escalators to protect them from precipitation and ensure a safer and more reliable experience for customers. When installation of a canopy is not possible, exposed escalators will be replaced with stairs. The River Road & Campus Drive entrance does not have the infrastructure needed to install a canopy and would require a substantial redesign to do so. As a result, the escalator at this location is being replaced with a staircase.

How will this affect my trip?

While the escalator is being removed and the staircase widened, the entrance will remain open. Customers will be able to use a portion of the existing stairway to access the station and the elevator will remain open.

How long will the project take?

Construction on the first half of the stairway will continue until late December 2023. Once the first half is complete, construction on the second half of the stairway will continue until project completion in Summer 2024.

How can I stay informed about the project?

Additional information can be found on the Escalator, Canopy and Elevator Project page. Customers are also encouraged to sign up for MetroAlerts for text or email messages or contact Customer Relations at 202-637-7000 with additional questions.
