Pentagon City East Side of South Hayes Street Entrance Closure

Advisory Effective: 8/16/21 - 12/10/21

On August 16, 2021, Metro will begin a major capital project replacing the two entrance escalators at Pentagon City on the east side of South Hayes Street. The project will replace the current escalators with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. Metro’s contractor KONE will install the escalators as part of an ongoing project to replace 130 escalators across the Metrorail system over the next seven years.

How will this work affect my trip?

During construction, the entrance at the east side of S. Hayes Street will close. While these escalators are out of service, customers will be able to access the station using the entrance on the west side of S. Hayes Street, between Army-Navy drive and 15th Street, the pedestrian tunnel on 12th and S. Hayes Street or the elevator on the east side of S. Hayes Street.

How long will the project take?

The replacement of the east side entrance escalators is expected to take approximately five months for site preparation, demolition, construction, installation, and testing. Once complete, construction on the west side entrance will begin.
