Pentagon Faregate Replacement

Advisory Effective: 10/21/22 - 12/16/22

On November 6, 2022, Metro will begin a capital project replacing the faregates at Pentagon with brand-new, faster and more reliable ones. The new gates are capable of two-way operation, so that customers can enter or exit the station at any gate, increasing the number of gates a customer can use. This technology investment is part of Metro’s ongoing commitment to improving the customer experience and ensuring the regional infrastructure remains in a state of good repair.

Pentagon will be the final station to receive new faregates as part of Metro’s faregate replacement project. Additional work continues as we explore methods to prevent customers from entering rail stations without paying. This includes testing faregate modifications later this fall, with prototypes currently in development.

How will this work affect my trip?
The faregates will be replaced one array at a time, beginning with the section of gates to the left of the station manager kiosk (as you enter the station). While one set of faregates are out of service, the other will remain open.

How long will the project take?
The overall project is expected to take approximately 8 weeks, with each array requiring approximately four weeks for installation, as well as supporting duct and tile work.

How can I stay informed about the project?
Additional information can be found on the Metrorail Faregate Replacement Project page. Customers are also encouraged to sign up for MetroAlerts text or email messages to receive project updates and service information or contact Customer Service at 202-637-7000 with additional questions.
