Tenleytown-AU Escalator Replacement
Advisory Effective: 8/30/21 - 12/31/23
On August 30, 2021, Metro began a major capital project replacing all four entrance escalators at Tenleytown-AU, as well as the three escalators that run from the intermediate level to the mezzanine level. All seven escalators will be replaced with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. Metro’s contractor KONE will install the escalators as part of an ongoing project to replace 130 escalators across the Metrorail system by 2028.
Four of the seven escalators have been replaced to date: two at the west entrance and two that run from the intermediate level to the mezzanine.
How will this work affect my trip?
To accelerate the remaining work, the entrance closest to 40th Street will be closed for approximately four months from August 28, 2023, through late December 2023. By closing the entrance, construction crews can work on both east entrance escalators at the same time, increasing project efficiency and reducing overall project duration by roughly two months. While the entrance closest to 40th Street is closed, the elevator near 40th Street on the east side of Wisconsin Avenue and the entrance on the west side of Wisconsin Avenue will remain open.
During the entrance closure, construction crews will also continue to replace the final escalator that runs from the intermediate level to the mezzanine.
All escalator replacement work at Tenleytown-AU is scheduled to be complete upon the reopening of the entrance closest to 40th Street in late December.
How long will the project take?
The replacement of all seven escalators is expected to be completed in late December 2023.
