Tenleytown-AU Escalator Replacement
Advisory Effective: 8/30/21 - 11/10/23
On August 30, 2021, Metro will begin a major capital project replacing all four entrance escalators at Tenleytown-AU, as well as the three escalators that run from the intermediate level to the mezzanine level. All seven escalators will be replaced with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. Metro’s contractor KONE will install the escalators as part of an ongoing project to replace 130 escalators across the Metrorail system over the next seven years.
Replacing the escalators will require an elaborate system of cranes, trusses and pulleys to move multi-ton escalator components in and out of the worksite. In order to do this, Metro will close one escalator on the east side between the street and landing for the duration of the project. This chute will allow the contractor to remove and bring in these large, heavy escalator parts safely.
How will this work affect my trip?
The seven escalators will be replaced one at a time beginning with the entrance on the west side of Wisconsin Avenue. During construction:
- The east entrance will have one escalator closed for the duration of the project and one will be available as a two-way staircase
- The east entrance elevator will remain open
- The west entrance will have one escalator as a two-way staircase while the other one is being replaced
- Some weekend entrance closures are expected throughout this project. Check posted signs for more information.
How long will the project take?
The replacement of all seven escalators is expected to take about 2.5 years for site preparation, demolition, construction, installation and testing.
