Weekend Track Work to Close Arlington Cemetery Metrorail Station

This weekend Metro will undertake a major track rehabilitation project on the Blue Line that will close the Arlington Cemetery Metrorail station for three days. Metrorail will operate special service on the Blue, Orange and Yellow lines and will provide free shuttle bus service between the Pentagon and Rosslyn Metrorail stations to get riders around the closure.

Metro personnel will replace the rail switch outside the Arlington Cemetery Metrorail station on the Blue Line from 8 p.m., Friday, January 12 to midnight, Monday, January 15. A rail switch or “interlocking” is an intersection in the track, where trains “switch” from one track to another. This work must be done to ensure service quality and safe operation through the Arlington Cemetery station.

This weekend, our riders should visit the Metro Web site at www.metroopensdoors.com to review service changes for this weekend and plan accordingly and identify where they are traveling to and from to determine whether the trip will require using free shuttle bus service.

To perform this work, the following service pattern will be in effect:

The Arlington Cemetery Metrorail station will be closed from 8 p.m. on Friday, January 12, to midnight, Monday, January 15.

Metro will provide free shuttle bus service every five minutes between the Pentagon and Rosslyn Metrorail stations with a stop at the Arlington Cemetery Metrorail station until 7 p.m., on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The Blue Line will operate from Franconia-Springfield to the Mt. Vernon Square/7th-Convention Center Metrorail stations.

The Orange Line will operate from Vienna/Fairfax-GMU to the New Carrollton and Largo Town Center Metrorail stations.

The Yellow Line will operate from the Huntington to Greenbelt Metrorail stations.

Starting Friday at 8 p.m., and all day Saturday and Sunday, all Blue, Orange and Yellow Line trains will operate on their normal weekend schedules.

On Monday, January 15, all Blue, Orange and Yellow Line trains will operate every eight minutes from the ends of the lines during peak hours. Off-peak service will operate every 12 to 15 minutes from the ends of the lines.

The Red and Green lines will run normally, with no scheduled service changes.

Parking is always free on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday, Metro will collect parking fees from its station parking facilities.

To alert customers about this work, Metro will place special rail maps inside its train stations and on its rail cars, place notices on station kiosks, and make train and system announcements. A printable version of the special rail map is also available in PDF format.

The Trip Planner, located on Metro’s Web site, will not reflect the impact of this work on its itineraries. Customers should allow more time for their trips because of this work. For more information on traveling by Metrobus or Metrorail, customers may call (202) 637-7000 or TTY (202) 638-3780.
