Metro Board chairman's statement on federal funding of Metro

H.R. 401, the “National Capital Transportation Amendments Act of 2007” was introduced yesterday in the U.S. House of Representatives. It was co-sponsored by the entire area congressional delegation, including U.S. Representatives Davis, Hoyer, Moran, Norton, Sarbanes, van Hollen, Wolf and Wynn. The proposed legislation renews efforts to commit the federal government to provide funding for the Metro system. H.R. 401 would provide $1.5 billion in federal money to Metro over the 10 years for capital improvements and critical maintenance.

After learning of the introduction of the resolution, Metro Board Chair Gladys Mack said, “We at Metro are very pleased and appreciative that the area congressional delegation has acted to support federal funding to keep the Metro system in a state of good repair so that we can continue to efficiently serve the federal workforce, which constitutes the majority of our riders. The District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia want to work closely with the Congress to give Metro greater financial stability through dedicated funding.”
