Charles Deegan Elected Chairman of Metro's Board of Directors

Charles Deegan has been elected to serve a year-long term as Chairman of the Board of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority effective immediately. Mr. Deegan, a Board member representing Maryland, succeeds Gladys Mack, whose one-year term as chairman ended today.

"During my term of leadership, I shall stress accountability, transparency, safety and customer service," said Deegan. "I plan to ride our buses and rail system often over the next year, and to continually talk to our customers to find ways the system can be improved."

Deegan, 58, joined the Metro Board in May 2004 representing Prince George’s County, MD. He is appointed to the Board by the Governor of Maryland.

Deegan is also President of the Board of Directors for Prince George’s Community Federal Credit Union. He retired in December 2004 as the Chief of the Equipment Maintenance Division in the Department of Public Works and Transportation for Prince George’s County. In addition, he has served as the President of the Prince George’s County Board of Elections, was a representative from Maryland on the Standards Board of the United States Election Assistance Commission, and was the Maryland Delegation Director for the International Association of Clerks, Recorders, Election Officials and Treasurers (IACREOT).

Also today, Christopher Zimmerman, a Virginia representative of the Board, was elected First Vice Chairman, and Jim Graham, a District of Columbia representative of the Board, was elected Second Vice Chairman.
