Waterfront-SEU Metrorail Station Elevator Modernization Project Delayed

The modernization of the street elevator at the Waterfront-SEU Metrorail station which began on December 20, will be delayed as a result of issues uncovered during the renovation process.

During the renovation process, a fiberglass casing for the elevator's main piston collapsed due to underground water pressure. The casing extends approximately 68 feet below sea-level. Metro currently has several pumps operating to keep the station dry. The Waterfront-SEU Metrorail station remains open and is safe for customers to use.

Metro is working to resolve the issue, however it will significantly delay the project’s completion date.

Metro will continue to provide free shuttle-bus service for those customers unable to navigate the station without the use of an elevator. Customers should call 202-962-1825 in advance of their trip to enable Metro officials to have a shuttle bus waiting to take them to the Anacostia Metrorail station. Buses will be stationed in the area to accommodate these individuals.

An elevator modernization includes replacing a majority of the mechanical parts and elevator cab equipment with new ones to ensure the elevator operates safely and reliably for customers, and extends the life of the elevator.
