Metro Installing Safety Warning Strobe Light Atop Metrobuses

Metro is installing a special warning strobe light atop Metrobuses operating in the District of Columbia as part of a pilot program to improve pedestrian safety.

The warning strobe lights will be affixed to 100 buses traveling throughout the District of Columbia in the next 60 days.

The yellow warning strobe light will help pedestrians and other motorists spot Metrobuses operating along city streets and provide additional lighting for early morning and evening bus users.

"We are always looking for ways to improve safety and we hope the installation of these safety beacons can make a difference," said Jack Requa, Metro’s Chief Operating Officer for Metrobus. "Metro is the first transit agency in the United States to test warning strobe lights atop buses. We believe this is another helpful safety tool designed to improve pedestrian safety throughout the region."

Metro began installing the strobe lights last week.
