Emeka Moneme sworn in as Metro Board member

Emeka Moneme, acting Director of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), was sworn in as the District of Columbia’s newest voting representative to the Metro Board of Directors today.

Moneme has extensive experience working with public management and finance - particularly in the highway and transit industries. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty appointed him acting Director of DDOT in January. Moneme previously served as Metro’s Chief of Staff.

Moneme is filling the slot on the Metro Board that was vacated when Gladys Mack announced in January that she was retiring after 24 years as a Board member. Mack served two terms as a Metro Board member from 1979 to 1991 and from 1995 to 2007.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to represent the interests of the people of the District to the Metro Board,” said Moneme. “I look forward to bringing their views to the table. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Gladys Mack for her years of service at WMATA. She demonstrated an abundance of leadership and commitment to public service.”

Moneme joined the District of Columbia government in 2000 in the Department of Public Works (DPW), where he was instrumental in developing and implementing a separate Department of Transportation. While with DDOT, he also worked on the agency’s first business plan and directed reforms of the capital programming process. He later served as that agency’s senior advisor on financial and federal legislative issues.

Moneme joined Metro in 2006 as Chief of Staff. In that role he managed the daily operations of the Office of the General Manager and coordinated the activities of the Executive Leadership Team.

Moneme holds a master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Cincinnati and a bachelor’s degree from Miami (Ohio) University.
