Helen Lew appointed Inspector General for Metro

Helen LewThe Metro Board of Directors has appointed Helen Lew as the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority’s (Metro) first inspector general. She starts on April 30.

Lew currently serves as the Assistant Inspector General for Audit at the U.S. Department of Education and brings nearly 34 years of professional experience to her new position at Metro.

“With Helen Lew as an inspector general, we are well on our way to increasing Metro’s transparency, improving accountability, and restoring the trust of our customers and funding partners,” said Metro Board Chairman Charles Deegan, who made it a priority to hire an inspector general within the first 60 days of his term as chairman.

The Board Directors undertook a national search to fill the inspector general position, a job that is similar to oversight positions in federal and state governments. Lew, who will report directly to the Metro Board, will investigate contracts, complaints of fraud and waste and abuse, scrutinize departmental activities and programs, review policies, issue recommendations and report the findings.

Lew has extensive experience in leading audits, evaluations and analyses of information technology and financial management issues of major federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Government Accountability Office.

Lew earned a bachelor’s of science degree from American University and a Management Information Systems Certificate from George Washington University.
