Metro puts Southeast Bus Garage up for sale

For sale: a 1936 bus garage and parking lot. The asking price: at least $60 million.

Metro officially has put its Southeast Bus Garage and employee parking lot up for sale and will be accepting sealed bids until July 23. The two properties at 17 M Street in southeast Washington are just one block from the new Washington Nationals ballpark and adjacent to the Navy Yard Metro station. The parcels are 69,607 and 27,558 square feet and are separated by Van Street. A one-story brick industrial building, which houses 114 buses sits on the larger piece of land.

Part of the sale requires that the buyer rent the properties back to Metro for up to 36 months. Transit agency officials hope to build a larger, modern bus garage and police training facility on 16.5 acres of land at the D.C.Village in southwest Washington. The Metro Board agreed last month to work with the District of Columbia to acquire that property. Proceeds from the garage and lot would be used to build another bus facility, which could cost up to $130 million.

The west entrance of the Navy Yard rail station and an adjacent employee parking lot were sold to Monument Realty last year. The station is being expanded to accommodate baseball fans. Monument Realty also plans to build residential, office and retail space along Half Street. Development of the east entrance of the station is still being negotiated.
