Metro increases security at stations, parking lots

Bombing attempts in the U.K. and the upcoming July Fourth holiday have prompted Metro to step up security.

Additional Metro Transit Police officers will be visible in rail stations and parking lots. The Transportation Security Administration also has volunteered special security teams to patrol some stations.

“We had already planned to increase security for the Fourth of July holiday and because of the anniversary of the July 7 subway attack in London,” said Polly Hanson, assistant general manager of safety, security and emergency management. “Given what happened last week in Britain, we wanted to increase patrols. Although we have received no information of a credible threat to the transit system, we still will remain vigilant,” Hanson said.

Metro passengers are encouraged to report suspicious behavior to transit police at 202-962-2121.

Transit police initiated several security enhancements after the attack on the London subway system in 2005, including increased inspections of trains, stations and buses and adding more explosive-containment trash cans.
