New bicycle racks coming to four stations

Customers will see new inverted U bicycle racks at four Metrorail stations in an effort to improve amenities and station access for individuals who ride their bikes to Metro.

Over the next four months, Metro will replace older bike racks at the Forest Glen, Dunn Loring, Prince George’s Plaza and Shady Grove Metrorail stations. The new U racks provide space for two bikes on each rack.

Signs in the stations and stickers on the bike racks will inform riders about the replacement schedule. Customers are encouraged not to use the bike racks during the anticipated replacement window.

“We are very pleased that Metro continues to improve services to its bike customers. An increasing number of Metro’s customers are riding to its rail stations and these new racks will go a long way to making the bike-rail connection an attractive option,” said Dorcas Adkins, safety education program director for the Washington Area Bicyclist Association.

Seventy-six Metrorail stations have bike parking. Many stations offer both bike racks and lockers, which individuals can rent for $70 a year. In addition, all Metrobuses can carry two bikes on bicycle racks attached to the front of the buses.
