Woman Fatally Struck by Train at Ballston-MU Metrorail Station this morning

Orange line Metrorail service was disrupted for about three hours after a woman was fatally struck by a six-car train at the Ballston-MU Metrorail station. The train was traveling outbound toward the Vienna Metrorail station at 9:38 a.m. today when the woman was hit.

Preliminary reports indicate that the 64 year-old Arlington woman intentionally placed herself on the path of the train.  Police are investigating.

Orange line trains traveled from the Vienna Metrorail station to the East Falls Church Metrorail station and from New Carrollton Metrorail station to the Clarendon Metrorail station while police and emergency personnel were at the scene. Sixteen buses shuttled passengers between the East Falls Church and Clarendon Metrorail stations.

The Ballston-MU and Virginia Square-GMU Metrorail stations re-opened at 12:32 p.m.
