Metro's Yellow Line rail bridge closure highlights weekend service changes

Metro will shut down the Yellow Line rail bridge over the Potomac River this weekend to do track maintenance and conduct an annual bridge inspection. In addition, track maintenance will take place on the Red and Orange lines and officials will test rail cars on the Green Line, also causing delays.

Yellow Line Rail Bridge Inspection and Track Maintenance

The Yellow Line will operate only between the Huntington and King Street Metrorail Stations starting Friday, August 10, at 10 p.m., and concluding Sunday, August 12, at 11:59 p.m., so that Metro can perform track maintenance and conduct a regular annual inspection of the Yellow Line rail bridge over the Potomac River. When a Yellow Line train arrives at the King Street Metrorail station, passengers must transfer to a Blue Line train because the Yellow Line will not operate between the King Street and Fort Totten Metrorail stations. Yellow Line customers from Huntington who need to get to the Green Line, will need to transfer to the Blue Line at King Street then transfer to the Green Line at L’Enfant Plaza.

Passengers traveling between Fort Totten and L’Enfant Plaza must take the Green Line. All Blue Line trains will operate with six-cars throughout the entire weekend with additional trains available for service if necessary.

Red Line Track Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the Takoma and Silver Spring Metrorail stations should add up to 15 minutes of travel time for their trips because of track maintenance work. Inbound and outbound trains between these locations will share one track from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, August 11, and Sunday, August 12.

Orange Line Track Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the New Carrollton and Cheverly Metrorail stations should add up to 30 minutes of travel time for their trips because of track maintenance. Inbound and outbound trains between these locations will share one track from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, August 11, and Sunday, August 12. To help expedite rail travel into downtown Washington, every other Orange Line train will terminate at the Cheverly Metrorail station and return to the Vienna Metrorail station.

Green Line Rail Car Testing

Metrorail customers traveling on the Green Line should add 10 to15 minutes of travel time for their trips because of new railcar testing that will take place on the line. Inbound and outbound trains operating between the Greenbelt and College Park Metrorail stations will share one track while new trains are tested from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 11.
