Cheverly, Landover and New Carrollton Metro Stations to Close this Weekend for Track Work

This weekend Metro will undertake a major track rehabilitation project at the Cheverly Metrorail station on the Orange Line requiring the closure of the Cheverly, Landover and New Carrollton Metrorail stations. The Orange Line will operate from the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU to Deanwood Metrorail stations. Metro will provide free shuttle bus service between Deanwood and New Carrollton with stops at Cheverly and Landover to get riders around the closure.

Metro will replace the rail switch outside the Cheverly Metrorail station on the Orange Line from 10 p.m., Friday, August 31 to 11:59 p.m., Monday, September 3 (Labor Day). A rail switch or “interlocking” is an intersection in the track, where trains “switch” from one track to another. This work must be done to ensure service quality and safe operation through the Cheverly Metrorail station.

To perform this work, the following service pattern will be in effect:

O The Orange Line will operate between the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU and Deanwood Metrorail stations from 10 p.m., Friday, August 31, to11:59 p.m. Monday, September 3 (Labor Day).

O The Orange Line will operate on its regular weekend schedules and will operate on a Sunday schedule on Monday, September 3, Labor Day.

O Metro will provide free shuttle bus service every eight to 10 minutes between the Deanwood and New Carrollton Metrorail stations with a stop at the Cheverly and Landover Metrorail stations.

O Parking is always free on the weekends and major holidays.

O Orange Line riders should park at the Largo and Morgan Boulevard Metrorail stations on the Blue Line and the Greenbelt Metrorail station on the Green Line if they do not wish to wait for the shuttle bus from New Carrollton, Landover and Cheverly.

To alert customers about this work, Metro will place banners in stations, notices at station manager’s kiosks, and make train and system announcements. Additional information is available on Metro’s web site at www.metroopensdoors.com.

The Trip Planner, located on Metro’s Web site, will not reflect the impact of this work on its schedules. Customers should allow more time for their trips because of this work. For more information on traveling by Metrobus or Metrorail, customers may call (202) 637-7000 or TTY (202) 638-3780.
