Metrobus 31st Annual Roadeo winners named

A Prince George’s County, MD, man who has been driving a Metrobus for 37 years, won the top award at the 31st Annual Metrobus Roadeo on Saturday, Sept. 15.

For the 19th time, Robert L. Miles of Bowie, MD, who works at the Landover Metrobus Division in Prince Georges County, MD, competed against 69 fellow bus drivers on an obstacle course consisting of 11 obstacles that cover every conceivable maneuver that a bus operator would encounter on the street. Miles demonstrated his excellent driving skills on the obstacle course and attained points for personal appearance, smoothness of operation and safety.

Metrobus Operators Howard Bias, Jr., and Kenneth Lee, both from Bowie, MD, and both from the Landover Bus Division, claimed second and third place in the annual competition.

The Metrobus Roadeo also includes a competition for maintenance teams. Six mechanical teams consisting of three members each participated this year. They searched for planted defects on a bus and troubleshot components, including engine modules, an air conditioning module and an air brake board. The team that located the greatest number of defects in the shortest period of time won the competition.

The winning mechanic team, competing for only the second time, represents the Technical Support Services Branch in Washington, D.C. Team members included Kimphi Trinh of Gaithersburg, MD, David Swearman of Stevensville, MD, and Don Rich of LaPlata, MD.

The second place team from the Bladensburg Heavy Overhaul facility in Washington, D.C., included Truc Hoang of Centreville, VA, William Morgan of Bowie, MD, and Locksley McKenzie of Spotsylvania, VA.

The third place mechanics team, from the Four Mile Run garage consisted of Kelvin Hall of King George, VA, Bora Eam of Hyattsville, MD, and James Lanham of Summerduck, VA.

The first place operator and maintenance teams will travel to Austin, TX, to represent Metro at the American Public Transportation Association International Bus Roadeo in May 2008.
