Elevator Rehabilitation Program to Continue 65 Elevators to Undergo Midlife Overhaul

Another 65 Metro elevators will get a midlife makeover under a four-year, $13.9 million contract approved by the Metro Board of Directors.

During fiscal years 2008 to 2012, Metro elevators approaching the 20-year mark will be overhauled to extend the life of the units and make them more reliable for customer use.

Under the current midlife overhaul program, 96 elevators will be rehabilitated by summer 2008 when the contract and funding for the six-year capital program expires. To date, 75 elevators have been rehabbed under this program.

Elevators have a typical lifespan of 40 years and undergo a major rehabilitation after 20 years. The midlife overhaul program is essential to maintain elevator availability and reliability. Currently, 95.2 percent of Metro’s elevators are available for customers on an average day. Metro maintains and operates 265 elevators, of which 230 are used daily by Metro passengers. The remainder can be found in Metro’s non-passenger facilities, such as rail yards and office buildings.

Elevator rehabilitations include replacing driving machines/hydraulic pump units, power and logic controllers, conduit and wiring, hoist ropes, traveling cable, hydraulic pistons and cylinders, cab interiors, and entrance doors and frames.
