Bus operator struck, killed by tractor trailer

A 37-year-old veteran Metrobus operator was struck and killed by a tractor trailer when he exited the bus after it became disabled along southbound I-395 at approximately 5:50 a.m. today in Arlington County.

The bus operator was headed to make his first trip of the morning when bus number 2677 experienced mechanical problems and became disabled in a travel lane near the southbound I-395 exit ramp toward Shirlington. The five-year veteran was struck by a tractor trailer when he exited the empty bus.

The bus operator worked out of the Four Mile Run Metrobus Division in Arlington. He was scheduled to operate the REX Bus route from Fort Belvoir to the King Street Metrorail station.

The accident is being investigated jointly by Metro Transit Police, Arlington County Police and Virginia State Police. Metro officials will also conduct an internal investigation.

The identity of the operator will be shared after next of kin have been notified.
