Metrobus operator killed by tractor trailer

Veteran Metrobus operator Keith Dodson, 37, was struck and killed by a tractor trailer when he exited the bus he was driving after it became disabled along southbound I-395 in Arlington County at 5:48 a.m. today, Thursday, October 25.

The accident occurred on the access road from South Glebe Road to southbound I-395 at Shirlington Circle.

A Washington, DC, resident, Dodson was headed to make his first trip of the morning when bus number 2677 experienced mechanical problems and became disabled in the right lane of the access road. The driver of a Nissan Sentra was slowing to avoid the bus when her car was struck from behind by the tractor trailer. The car and tractor trailer drove to the right of the Metrobus on the shoulder. Dodson, who has been a Metrobus operator for five years, was standing outside of the bus and was struck by the tractor trailer.

He was transported to George Washington University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The bus operator worked out of the Four Mile Run Metrobus Division in Arlington. He was scheduled to operate the REX Bus route from Fort Belvoir to the King Street Metrorail station.

The accident is being investigated jointly by Metro Transit Police, Arlington County Police and Virginia State Police. Metro officials will also conduct an internal investigation.
