Pentagon Metrorail station reopens

Track fire caused evening rush hour delays on the Blue and Yellow lines

The Pentagon Metrorail station reopened at 5:32 p.m. after a track fire closed the station for approximately 45 minutes. Blue and Yellow line riders can still expect residual delays throughout the remainder of this evening’s rush hour.

The Pentagon Metrorail station closed at 4:45 p.m. due to heavy smoke in the station. Metro personnel and the Arlington County Fire Department responded. For a short period, no trains were running through the Pentagon station. By 5:10 p.m., after the fire was extinguished, Metrorail trains shared a single track between Pentagon City and Arlington Cemetery on the Blue Line, and between Pentagon City and L’Enfant Plaza on the Yellow Line. In addition, Metro ran free shuttle buses to carry passengers between the Pentagon, Pentagon City, Arlington Cemetery and L’Enfant Plaza Metrorail stations.

The smoke and fire incident at the Pentagon station was caused by debris on the track, not an arcing insulator as initially reported.
