Bronze sculpture installed at Georgia Ave Metrorail station

The creative work of two local artists, sculptor, Lisa Scheer, and poet, E. Ethelbert Miller, was recently installed at the east entrance of the Georgia Ave-Petworth Metrorail station.

Scheer’s 5-foot high, 6-foot wide bronze sculpture of a stylized leaf incorporates an untitled poem by Miller. The sculpture rests atop a granite base and an inlaid circular paver.

“The artwork selection panel, which included representatives from the Georgia Avenue-Petworth community, wanted to select artwork that would be thought provoking,” said Michael McBride, Metro’s Manager of Art in Transit. “The artists took the notion to heart and decided to use a leaf to remind viewers of the seasons of life and the importance of embracing presence. Sometimes as we rush here and there, it’s good to stop and give significance to the moment.”

The project was sponsored by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities as part of its DC Creates Public Art Program, which purchases, commissions, and installs artwork for public sites throughout theDistrict of Columbia. It is the latest installment of Metro’s Art in Transit Program.

Metro’s Art in Transit Program installs artwork throughout the Metrorail system to enhance the travel experience of Metro customers. The program works with artists, community groups, government agencies and businesses to select and install artwork that captures the spirit and vitality of the region.
