Metro's Board Allocates Funds to Continue Design Enhancements to Rosslyn Metrorail Station

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) Board of Directors allocated $450,000 today, December 13, to develop a preliminary design for a new entrance at the Rosslyn Metrorail station on the Blue and Orange Lines.

The initial funding source of $1.5 million was available from the completion of the Ballston Metrorail station enhancement project in 2006. Arlington County has authorized the use of these funds to initiate a design concept for the new east entrance at the station.

The Rosslyn Metrorail station project entrance will include three new high-speed elevators, an underground station mezzanine and passageway connection, and an emergency stairway. This project would be funded by Arlington County with County bonds, expected funds from NVTA, developer contributions, and federal and state grants.

“With the continuing development of the Rosslyn area, and working in conjunction with Arlington County, we believe these future enhancements will help ease the current congestion at the existing entrance,” said Chris Zimmerman, Metro’s Board Vice-Chairman representing Arlington County, VA. “A new entrance at the Rosslyn Metrorail station would provide improved access in support of recent and anticipated development, improve pedestrian safety, increase convenience for persons with mobility requirements, facilitate inter-modal transfers and attract more transit users.”
