Cracked rail at Grosvenor-Strathmore Metrorail station slows trains

Metrorail riders on the Red Line are going to experience moderate delays as a result of a cracked rail that was discovered this morning (January 3) on an outbound track at 9:12 a.m. at the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metrorail station.

Red Line trains are sharing one track between the Grosvenor-Strathmore and Medical Center Metrorail stations. Customers can expect it to take slightly longer to get to their destinations and can expect more crowded Red Line trains this morning as a result of the cracked rail.

Officials are making a temporary repair to the track. Once that is complete, trains will be permitted to ride on the area of track at restricted speeds. A new piece of track is expected to be installed tonight after the Metrorail system closes.

The crack triggered a signal that alerted Metro officials of the problem. Track inspectors were dispatched to confirm the problem, assess the damage and begin the repairs.
