Metro to operate modified service on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Metrorail will operate on a special schedule and Metrobus and MetroAccess will operate on a regular weekday schedule on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 21. Parking at Metrorail stations will be free on the holiday.

On Monday, January 21, the Metrorail system will operate on a modified Saturday holiday schedule opening at 5 a.m., and closing at midnight.

On the Yellow and Green lines, trains will depart every 12 minutes from the Branch Avenue, Greenbelt, Huntington and Fort Totten Metrorail stations during the day and will operate every six minutes in the downtown core.

Due to bridge repairs this weekend at the Metro Center Metrorail station, Red, Blue and Orange Line trains will operate on a special schedule.

On the Red Line, all trains will depart the Shady Grove and Glenmont Metrorail stations approximately every nine minutes during the day. All Red Line trains will share one track, two at a time, between the Farragut North and Judiciary Square Metrorail stations every 18 minutes.

On the Blue and Orange Lines, all trains will depart approximately 16 minutes during the day from the Franconia-Springfield, Largo Town Center, Vienna/Fairfax-GMU and New Carrollton Metrorail stations. All Blue and Orange Line trains will share one track, two at a time, approximately every 18 minutes between the Farragut West and Smithsonian Metrorail stations.

Last year, Metro’s Board of Directors approved operating regular weekday service on Columbus Day, Veterans’ Day, Martin Luther King Day and President’s Day due to higher than usual ridership on those federal holidays. However, experience during the year did not support operating weekday Metrorail service, due to low ridership, so this year the rail system will operate on a modified Saturday holiday schedule.
