Metro continues weekend switch replacement work at the Medical Center Metrorail station

Metrorail riders should build at least 30 minutes of travel time into their schedule while riding the Red Line this weekend as Metro will be conducting vital track work.

As part of its infrastructure renewal program to ensure safe and reliable transportation, Metro will continue its switch replacement project at the Medical Center Metrorail station on the Red Line this weekend from 9 p.m. on Friday, January 25, through midnight on Sunday, January 27.

This weekend, Metro will continue to replace the switch at the Medical Center Metrorail station. A switch or “interlocking” is an intersection in the track, where trains can “switch” from one track to another, depending on their destination and route.

  • All Red Line trains will run every 15 minutes between the Friendship Heights and Glenmont Metrorail stations.
  • Every other Red Line train traveling to the Shady Grove Metrorail station will terminate at the Friendship Heights Metrorail station and return to the Glenmont Metrorail station.
  • Red Line trains will run every 30 minutes between the Friendship Heights and Shady Grove Metrorail stations, while sharing one track between the Friendship Heights and Grosvenor-Strathmore Metrorail stations.
